Year 6
Welcome to the Year 6 class page. Mrs Smith is the class teacher Monday to Wednesday and Mrs Woolley is the class teacher on Thursday and Friday. Mrs Bell supports the class each day. Mrs Bywater covers the class on a Wednesday morning for PE.
Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be returned on a Thursday for marking. Spellings will also be given out on a Friday to practise for the following week, they will be stuck in planners but can be practised in homework books. There may also be a spelling based activity stuck in homework books.
PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. This will be outdoors weather permitting so please ensure that appropriate PE kit is in school. It is suggested that it is brought on Monday and taken home on Friday to allow for any last-minute changes to our PE days.
We are very lucky this year to have our 50 Recommended Reads and our new Reading for Pleasure books for children to choose from. Children are welcome to choose books from either of these shelves or from our class library.
Reading books will be changed in class when needed and children will take ownership of this.
Please make sure you try to read daily at home! If you read four times a week and it is written in your Personal Organiser, you will get a raffle ticket to join our reading raffle!
Our Reading Scrapbook will also be sent home each week to further share our love of reading in class. I look forward to seeing your entries!
Spring
Wow! What a busy, exciting and fun-filled Spring term we have had.
In celebration of British Science Week, the children attended an exciting Science show all about change and adaptation at Horizon Community College. They also enjoyed creating their own balloon rockets and sending them on test flights!
The children dressed up as words for World Book Day and took part in a range of fun activities linked to the story ‘The Fox and the Star’ to celebrate the joy of reading.
In P.E, the children learnt new skills in athletics and hockey and demonstrated excellent teamwork during a variety of fun collaborative activities.
The children led beautiful class worships focusing on the themes of kindness, forgiveness and love which they confidently presented to both their peers and the younger children in school.
During our Literacy sessions, the children produced some beautiful pieces of writing inspired by our class text, The Invention of Hugo Cabret.
As part of Schools’ Football Week; Year 6 P.E. Ambassadors set up football related activities for all children to take part which included penalty shoot outs. Hopefully they didn’t let too many goals in!
The children were fortunate enough to attend the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. The children had an amazing day completing a rotation of sports including rugby, athletics, target sports, boccia and kinball. Everyone enjoyed the day immensely.
We took part in ‘the Big Lent Walk’ for CAFOD. This tied in with the theme of ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ and involved a 2.2 mile pilgrimage from school to church, Locke Park and back to school.
The children led the annual service in school for the Stations of the Cross and were able to undertake the task with great responsibility and respect. The children were great role models for the younger pupils and rose to the challenge effortlessly.
The children have produced some very pleasing products in DT including an automaton with Hepp DT and motorised buggy in class. I’m sure you’ll agree the finished products look amazing. The children had lots of fun creating them.
It has been a very busy term for Year 6 as they prepare to sit their SATs. They have worked very hard towards these assessments and have shown great effort, perseverance and resilience in their learning. We are very proud of their efforts and wish them good luck for some positive results.

Autumn 2
Year 6 have had a busy second half of autumn term! We had our trip to Crucial Crew where we received some excellent information about the use of public services and how to stay safe. We also had visitors from CAFOD in to talk to us about Catholic Social teaching and we completed some excellent activities during this session.
In PE, we have been lucky to be able to try out a range of different sports including archery and curling which was our favourite!
We have been very creative in our DT sessions where we designed, made and valuated a waistcoat. Our sewing skills improved this half term and we were able to apply this to our Christmas card this year. Additionally, we were very excited to make our class craft for the Christmas fair and sold lots of these to families.
This half term has been wonderful for our love of reading as we attended the opening of our reading den in front of school. We are very excited to get out there when the weather warms up. Our literacy text has also hooked us in - we are reading The Last Bear by Hannah Gold and is is fantastic. After the Christmas break we will finish the unit with a newspaper report about the events that the main character experienced during her time on Bear Island.
Autumn 1
Year six have had an excellent start to the year. We have complete our Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar unit and are well underway with writing our first text of the year. We are enjoying our current art unit and are working towards a portrait - they are looking great so far!
In maths we have completed our Place Value unit and have used concrete resources to support us with our learning.
The children have been challenged during our PE fitness sessions and have completed a variety of different exercises, some of which were not favoured by the children!
The class have worked so hard already and we are looking forward to what is coming this year.
