Year 6

Welcome to the Year 6 class page. Mrs Heald is the class teacher with Mrs Bell supporting each day. Mrs Bywater covers the class on a Thursday afternoon and Mrs Woolley all day on a Friday.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be returned on a Thursday for marking. Spellings will also be given out on a Friday to practise for the following week, they will be stuck in planners but can be practised in homework books. There may also be a spelling based activity stuck in homework books.

PE days are Thursday and Friday and will be outdoors weather permitting so please ensure that appropriate PE kit is in school. It is suggested that it is brought on Monday and taken home on Friday to allow for any last minute changes.

Each child will have a reading for pleasure book and also a book that matches with their reading age. Reading books will be changed in class when needed and children will take ownership of this.

Please make sure you try to read daily at home!  If you read four times a week and it is written in your Personal Organiser, you will get a raffle ticket to join our reading raffle!

We will also be introducing our 50 Recommended Reads for Year 6 this year and children are encouraged to see how many of the texts they can read during their time in Year 6.

Our Reading Scrapbook will also be sent home each week to further share our love of reading in class.

We look forward to working with you this year and helping to prepare you for life beyond primary school!

Spring Term 2024

Class 6 have had a busy term!

We have worked hard in Maths on a range of topics including volume, ratio, algebra and shape. It has been wonderful to see the children use manipulatives in Maths to understand concepts in a practical way.

In Literacy, we have used a variety of texts to inspire our writing. Recently, we have been reading The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjli OQ Rauf and had the exciting opportunity to go to the theatre to see it on stage! The show was brilliant and the class thoroughly enjoyed it.

Our Geography topics this term have focused on plastic pollution and sustainability. We have been very interested to learn about plastic waste globally and sustainability in the UK. We conducted some excellent fieldwork on our school grounds about plastic waste including surveys for pupils and staff - the children conducted their fieldwork sensibly and thoroughly.

Our RE learning this term has finished with our Lent/Easter unit of work. The children have been learning about Unity prior to our final topic and designed some high-quality stained-glass windows to show that we are at one with Jesus.

We have also been lucky to take part in a positive relationships workshop (where we took part in activities linked to kindness and friendships) and a positive mental health workshop (where we thought about our physical and mental health and how we can look after it).

Autumn Term

Class six have had a brilliant Autumn Term. We have enjoyed our Crime and Punishment topic and our Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar unit. Recently, we have written a non chronological report about an endangered animal using our new and improved knowledge of grammar. We have also enjoyed an amazing author event with SF Said about his current and new books.

Some of year six were lucky enough to take part in a Remembrance Ceremony at Shaw Lane. Two children laid a wreath and we met the Mayor of Barnsley.

At the end of Autumn 1, the class enjoyed their residential trip to Beaumanor Hall. They had a brilliant week taking part in outdoor adventurous activities, worked on teamwork and enjoyed a week with friends.
