It has been a wonderful Spring term in Year 6!
In Literacy, our work has focused on the book Shackleton’s journey. We produced and performed motivational speeches and poetry based on the book.
In Maths, we were developing our knowledge of percentages and how they are related to decimals and fractions. We created our own stencils and prints using them in our Artwork. We were able to explore different combinations of colour for affect.
In PE, we were developing our rugby skills and playing rugby games using these skills.
As a celebration of our RE work, we planned and led our own worship based on what we had learnt using scripture from the unit. In our Islam topic, we learnt about the 5 pillars of Islam with particular attention on the pillar of Zakat.
We started our Topic of Frozen Kingdoms. This has been geography based and we have learnt about the climates of the Polar regions and the habitats that are there. In computing, we focussed on e-safety and learnt how to identify websites that were safe and secure.
Autumn 2 - 2021
Year 6 have had an amazing Autumn term!
In Literacy our work has linked to our Topic of Maafa. We have written a non-chronological report about the Underground Railroad. It was interesting to find out about and share information about how enslaved people escaped slavery. We also wrote newspaper reports about the abolishment of slavery.
In Maths, we have been focusing on fractions, we have been calculating with fractions, simplifying fractions and finding fractions of amounts. As part of our Topic, Maafa, we have been completing work about key events in the slave trade, in particular the lead up to and the abolition of slavery. We have also been considering the lives of black people today and understanding what is meant by discrimination.
In Design Technology, we have been planning a healthy meal. As part of this, we created carrot and coriander soup. In PE, we have been developing our netball skills, our understanding of the different positions and we have been able to apply these to netball games.
Autumn 1 - 2021
Year 6 have made an amazing start to this academic year! We have started reading our class novel Hansel and Gretel. In Literacy, we are really looking forward to seeing the children show off their writing skills as we continue the story of Hansel and Gretel in their own way.
In Maths, we are working on recapping and developing our place value knowledge. We will be moving onto calculations where we will cover the long methods of calculation plus fractions, decimals and percentages.
Our new topic ‘Maafa’ has already sparked curiosity and interest and we look forward to finding out more about Africa, the slave trade and the abolition of slavery. Running alongside our topic, will be an art topic about significant artists. As part of Science, we will be learning all about the circulatory system.
